31 Days :: Prepare Your Heart by Expressing Thankfulness - Day 19

Yesterday we talked a little bit about preparing our hearts for thankfulness by keeping a gratitude journal. Opening our eyes to the blessings that surround us is the first step. Once we have hearts of thankfulness, it begins to naturally come out in our actions. Not only are we thinking thankful thoughts, but those thoughts then manifest in how we reach out to others.

Saying thank you may sound like a little thing to most of us...we were trained to say it because it was just good manners, but I've begun to notice that saying thank you has become a little bit of a lost art. As a matter of fact, I know several people who rarely say it all. If a gift is given or something is done, you don't hear "Thank you!" Instead you hear, "Oh, you don't have to do that!" After a while it becomes amusing to see what the next response will be because all attempts to use those two little words are avoided.

There are personalities who exude thankfulness (like my Mom and Grandmother). It just naturally comes out of their spirit no matter what, but for the majority of us, thankfulness is a habit we learn over time and therefore it should be practiced at every chance possible. Learn how to say thank you with reckless abandon (: Look for ways to show others how much you appreciate them and don't just focus on family and friends. Seek for ways to bless the cashier at the grocery store, the postman, your child's teacher, etc.

A couple of years ago our apartment was having roof work done. We were very impressed by the care and diligence given by each roofer. They were helpful, gracious, respectful and took great pride in their work. We wanted to thank them for all of their efforts and to let them know how much we appreciated all they were doing. The answer? Cupcake love - we decided to make cupcakes with thank you notes attached to be given to the workers during their afternoon break.

The foreman was so taken by our gesture that he took a group picture to show his boss, cupcakes and all. The sad part was what he said next..."Ma'am, no one has ever done this for us before. In the 15 years I've been in construction no one has ever said thank you. Thank you so much for thinking of us!" The simple act of baking cupcakes was a bright spot in their day...not only did it put a smile on their face, but it put a smile in our hearts to know it made them feel special.
Another way we like to reach out is to leave little seasonal "Thinking of You" gifts on our neighbors' doorsteps. For the fall season small pumpkins with notes of thankfulness make an appearance. They can be used for Halloween and then flow right into Thanksgiving...a frugal and versatile gift all in one (: It's a simple and inexpensive way to connect and break down barriers with those you might not know very well.

When we reach out in thankfulness, it not only changes how we see others, but it alters how we move through life. We begin to connect on a deeper level and move beyond the "surface living" of generic "Hi's" and "Hello's." This open heart of thankfulness also begins to release judgments, enabling us see the soul of others and to meet them in a place of authenticity. The surface level, "Hi, how are you --- I'm fine" dialogs, now become authentic conversations of substance. We really want to know the cares, hurts, happy moments and times of sorrow of those around us so we can minister accordingly.

So the next time you go to the grocery store, make sure to tell the gentleman in the parking lot who gathers the carts how much you appreciate what he does. Offer a note of thanks to your favorite dry cleaner. Leave a little pumpkin for that neighbor down the street who always takes such great care of their yard and tell them how much you appreciate the work they do to make the neighborhood beautiful. When your little one helps her siblings, do something special to let her know how thankful you are for her helpful heart. Leave love notes of gratitude for the hubs for the hard work he does each day.

Seek out ways to express appreciation for everyone in your life and soon you'll discover that thankfulness is the key to open the floodgates of abundant blessings (; I hope you'll continue to join us for our 31 Days of Preparation journey. Tomorrow we'll move from thankfulness to preparing our hearts with forgiveness. Enter your email below and each post will automatically be delivered to your inbox. Don't forget to stop by the many other 31 Dayers for additional inspiration!

31 Days :: Prepare Your Heart with Thankfulness - Day 18

I've mentioned before that there are certain things I do each day to keep things running smoothly. One of these is the simple act of focusing my mornings with thankfulness. The way we begin our days sets the tone for how we finish our days. Ever had those times when you just wished you could go back to bed and begin again? It's all about getting started on the right foot.

Before my day begins, I center myself with these three components...
  • Center spiritually by having time for meditation, prayer and devotions
  • Center mentally by being thankful
  • Center physically with simple exercise

That second component of thankfulness is the one I want to focus on today. The way I center myself mentally is by keeping a gratitude journal.  Each morning I make a list of 10 things for which I'm thankful and it can be something as small as a great parking space to a biggy like healing. The depth of content really doesn't matter...the important thing is to begin noticing all of the good in your life, because we all have it. I know sometimes it feels like there isn't much to be thankful for, but oh, what a misconception (:

By training our eyes to look for the light in life, we begin to see more of it. We all know that focal points are important in design, but they also matter in life. That center of attraction pulls everything together. If you're focused on blessings, then you'll see more blessings. If you're tuned in to lack and what you don't have, then that's exactly what you'll see.

When I first started keeping a gratitude journal many moons ago, it felt a little odd and sometimes I kept writing the same things over and over again. Then one day I decided to look for new blessings during the day so I would have something different to write about in my journal the following morning...haha! Seek and ye shall find (;

When we open our hearts to being thankful, we begin to catch sight of the good that is sometimes hidden in the everyday. We begin to notice the small gestures made by others. We begin to witness the touches of grace that were so woefully neglected before. It's easy to spot the irritating, aggravating and annoying and it doesn't require much spiritual fortitude to express our disdain for these things once discovered.

People love to complain. Why? Because it doesn't require anything of us. It's easy. But when we're surrounded by the uncomfortable things of life and choose to be thankful anyway, ah...now that requires a part of the soul that digs deep. By excavating and using our thankful muscles, it trains our spirit to keep the lacks away and we naturally begin to see our days in a blessed way.

"Praise the Lord! Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever!" Psalm 106:1

So, if your days seem to be filled with more dark than light, try keeping a gratitude journal to open the pathway for more blessings to flow. You may just be surprised at what you might find (;

31 Days :: Preparing Your Heart for a Harvest - Day 3

Thank you for visiting The Homesteading Cottage. If you subscribe to our blog via RSS feed or email, you'll get helpful tips on simplicity, organization, all things DIY, natural cooking, entertaining, homesteading and emergency preparedness sent straight to you!

As many of your know, we're participating in the 31 Days Challenge with The Nester and we've chosen 31 Days of Preparation...the perfect topic for this season of harvest.

Preparation is good for the soul. It follows the cadence of life's rhythms for the times when things are out of our control. We've all had those experiences when life is moving along just fine and then, BAM! A great shift of change that propels us into a new realm of off-centeredness. We're no longer moving in that normal dance of our days and find ourselves in a new flow of existence resembling nothing of what we once knew.

Over the last few years we've gone through quite a few of these shifts. We all do. They can be little ones, big ones or even mid-sized bumps in the road, but I've noticed something interesting in these soul changing occurrences...they take us off balance so we can find our true center in Him. It's an opportunity for faith, growth and then harvest, but we have to prepare our hearts.

Ÿ  “Be watchful, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong.” 1 Corinthians 16:13

Ÿ  “Go to the ant, O sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise. Without having any chief, officer, or ruler, she prepares her bread in summer and gathers her food in harvest.” Proverbs 6:6-8

Ÿ  “Watch therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour.” Matthew 25:13

I like the first and last verses...keep watch or prepare because we don't know when changes in life will happen. Life is hard and if we aren't prepared for times of shift, we then can be subject to the whim of the moment. Much like preparing for an emergency with food storage, savings and gear to make sure we're physically taken care of, preparing our hearts can lessen times of stress and get us to the other side faster.

Below are 5 steps that have helped us through challenging times...

5 Steps to Prepare Your Heart for Harvest
  1. Schedule Time Alone: Set aside time each day to pray and meditate in God's word.
  2. Plant a Seed for a Harvest: Plant a seed of faith by giving God your disappointments, setbacks, hurts and broken dreams and trust that He's taking care of your circumstances.
  3. Look at Yourself in a Different Light: Begin to see yourself as favored, blessed, valuable and victorious no matter what you might be going through.
  4. Talk to Your Mountains So They Move: Declare His promises each day and start speaking victory over your future..."The Lord says I am blessed. I am favored. I am prosperous. I am healthy. I am whole. I’m a victor, not a victim.” Don’t talk constantly about your situation, but use your words to change your situation! All through the day say things such as, “I have the favor of God. I can do all things through Christ. I am blessed. I’m strong. I’m healthy.” When you speak like that, you're blessing your life and speaking favor into your future.
  5. Rest, but Stand Firm: Rest in His peace and stand strong. He'll give you the strength. Don't allow circumstances or others around you to bring defeat into your life. Press forward to whatever lies ahead and God will take you to the next level.
By using these steps to prepare our hearts ahead for any situation, it blesses us with the opportunity of peace and abundant harvest in every area of our lives.

Solitude on the Rocks of Life

Thank you for visiting The Homesteading Cottage. If you subscribe to our blog via RSS feed or email, you'll get helpful tips on simplicity, organization, all things DIY, natural cooking, entertaining, homesteading and emergency preparedness sent straight to you!

We've all been there...things aren't quite moving along the way we had hoped and we feel motionless and maybe alone. This summer has been a time of solitude on the rocks of life. Our plans for our Homesteading Cottage have taken some unsuspecting turns. Things are moving...I know they are...but it doesn't feel like it. I know God is organizing my world in a way I never imagined, but this place of getting used to new ropes feels awkward...like a baby taking her first steps.

Be prepared when you ask God to rock your world (; Over the last year, almost two, I've asked for a great deal from Him. A change of heart, mind, focus...these things do not align themselves lightly especially when hurt is involved. It usually requires giving ourselves over to something greater instead of giving in to our first instincts.

I'm a warrior and don't like it when wrongs are played out. It's even harder when ones I love are hurt. But life isn't always pretty. Bad things happen...and sometimes to us. People hurt us...some are even set out on doing us harm. People we love may be hurt by others who can't seem to remove themselves from their "me-centric" worlds to notice. Even when confronted with the reality of what they are doing, they still don't see it. And so we grieve. We grieve for those who have been hurt...and we grieve for ourselves. Mostly we grieve for what could have been...that unattainable "what-if" that we use as persistent torture.

But that "what-if" or "what could be" isn't here now, nor will it ever be and so we must strengthen our souls with the beauty that is already here. I've found that these seemingly motionless times of solitude is where our greatest work is done. It causes us to press into something that we never imagined before. It's during these times when we find ourselves walking on water and doing the unimaginable...but it requires the awkwardness of those first few steps of faith.

If you're experiencing a time of transition, great change or loneliness, just know that something greater is right around the corner. Maybe your world has been totally turned upside down and you can't see anything but destruction. Grieve and mourn, but warm yourself by the fires of hope.  This warmth allows an open door for miracles to move.  It may seem impossible, but just know that something beautiful can rise from those ashes if you let it...

"To those who have sorrow in Zion I will give them a crown of beauty instead of ashes. I will give them the oil of joy instead of sorrow, and a spirit of praise instead of a spirit of no hope. Then they will be called oaks that are right with God, planted by the Lord, that He may be honored." Isaiah 61:3

What to Do When You're Out of Your Element

Thank you for visiting The Homesteading Cottage. If you subscribe to our blog via RSS feed or email, you'll get helpful tips on simplicity, organization, all things DIY, natural cooking, entertaining, homesteading and emergency preparedness sent straight to you!

Many times when we face challenges, we seek comfort by surrounding ourselves with things that are familiar. It could be our designed spaces, projects, hobbies, old movies, work, relationships or even food...macaroni 'n' cheese please and don't forget a side of lasagna and chocolate cake!! Yes, comfort food is well known for its soothing affects, but inevitably that serving of temporary lusciousness is quickly developed into an ever so attractive chunk of fat on our thighs. {Sigh}

I've been going through that comfort mode craving, yet find it impossible to surround myself with those old familiar securities. Our business has gone through a bit of a change...some areas have grown quickly while others are in transition. The metal art side of the company has been put on hold so focus can be given to grow the transitional spots.

After our moving fiasco, new homesteading plans shifted when the home we were going to rent was sold.  We've yet to find another to fit the needed parameters, so we're staying in a beautiful cottage in the city owned by a dear friend.  We don't know how long we'll be here, therefore planting a garden or adding chickens is out of the question. The outside of the cottage is pretty much taken care of so we don't even need to mow, weed or get our hands dirty at all...not something I'm used to. The inside of the cottage is decorated and prepared for in such a way that it requires no tweaking on my part, which means my inner nesting urge is going untouched for the time being.

I'm so thankful for work that speaks to my soul, but as with many small indie companies, there's an ever present nitty-gritty work that needs constant tending if your business is going to continue to grow...and so I'm stuck in a sort of creative limbo. For the first time in my life I'm living and working in a space that requires no decor enhancement, no yard work of any kind nor continual maintenance that normally comes with day to day living.  Translation - No distractions. Hum...

A friend of mine thinks this is exactly what I need...grand design and all. She knows me all too well and has grown to understand the intricate crazy ball of interestingness that is my thought process (: I get so excited about the path of creative development that I take on too much, lose focus and end up putting off the nuts and bolts crucial for things to run smoothly behind the scenes.  Then I get frustrated when progression isn't happening as quickly as I had hoped and distraction ensues.  Sounds like my friend is right and I'm being offered a gift of dedicated focus (;

When we find ourselves out of our comfort zone, it's important to trust the flow. I find God has fascinating ways of limiting our distractions so the needed vital tasks of life can take center stage. That's where the magic happens.  We may not understand this jaunt of the journey, but if we fight the process, we'll just end up further off course. Trust something higher than yourself, embrace being out of your element and let go of the temporary comfort found by doing the familiar. Ask in faith for what you need and believe it will show up when the time is right.

So I've decided to trust and know that the path I'm on is leading to great things. For now I might not be gardening, painting, tending chickens or metalsmithing, but I'm sure God will nurture my soul by finding other ways for my hands to get dirty (:

“Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.” Mark 11:24

The Year of Expectations

Oh my goodness!  I can't believe this is officially The Homesteading Apartment's one year anniversary!  It seems as if it was just yesterday that the summer sun was beating down and I was waiting for the cold weather to come.  Then the next thing I knew Christmas was here and now we're approaching Valentine's Day!!

The last year has been one of learning, growth and tons of faith stretching (:  I'm a very impatient gal and when I see a vision I tend to want things to change NOW.  A season of waiting isn't something that has been cherished in the past, but this last year has given me a greater appreciation for these desert times.  In the desert thankfulness and gratitude abound.  The little things are reflected in a different light...a light that grows faith and you begin to see God working more clearly.

So this year I declare it to be The Year of Expectations.  I expect the miracles to come...I expect my life to change...I expect my dreams to come true and I expect to see God work in amazing ways.  In the past I've been afraid to expect great things because I didn't want to be disappointed.  Now I'm beginning to realize that expectation allows openness and possibilities to flourish.  So as I wait with great expectation, I am content and thankful.

My first step in doing this is to launch a couple of online shops.  Several years ago I opened a brick and mortar store, but never really took things online fully.  This year is the year to make it happen and so I'm introducing Natural esSCENTials and Little esSCENTials.  Both shops will grow as more things are added.  If you have a chance I hope you stop by.

So what is your focus for this year of 2011?  Are you in a season of waiting?  In what ways are you stretching your faith muscle and how are you faring along the way?

"But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run and not be weary and they shall walk and not faint."  ~ Isaiah 40:31
