10 Simple Steps to Declutter Your Spaces {Day 6}

Over the next few days we'll be focusing on clutter...or should I say, ways to get the clutter out of our lives (; To begin with the fundamentals, today we're sharing the 10 Simple Steps to Declutter Your Spaces.

When our environments are piled from pillar to post, chances are our lives are a mess too.  It makes it challenging to bring in the order if our surroundings look like a monkey has run amok (;  I know this from personal experience because I've always been a bit of a clutterbug and a piler - a sure sign you're a creative.

Seeing inspires the soul and if it's out of sight, I don't know it's there. Having things out on display (um, that's a sweet way of saying - "stuff all over the place") would motivate the designer in me. But as the years have passed, the appreciation of an organized environment has taken over...a place for everything and everything in its place.

Now I love neat spaces and thrive in them, but they have to be visually pleasing and fully functional for easy access. If I have to work too hard to put something away, more than likely it'll end up on the nearest table or desk.

Figuring out how to truly live in a space and finding neat ways to accentuate the positive has now become a passion. I've been very blessed to be able to help others create havens that reflect their personal style and have noticed that the first step is usually organization.

To bring in the organization, we first have to get rid of the clutter.  Below are the 10 simple steps we use to begin the process of organizing our spaces...

10 Simple Steps to Declutter Your Spaces

1) Ask a Friend for Their Eyes of Perspective
Organize with a friend when possible.  If you've got a lot of clutter, it probably means you have a hard time letting go of stuff.  Emotional attachments always pop up during organizing sessions and having another set of eyes can help provide the needed perspective.

2) Choose a Small Area to Tackle First
Begin with smaller projects first so the excitement of one completed task inspires the process to continue.  It could be a closet, a dresser or maybe just one drawer in that dresser.  Starting small means you won't feel overwhelmed and these little spaces will add up to big areas as you progress.

3) Create Four Sorting Piles...KEEP, DONATE, TRASH, MAYBE
If you're going to make headway with your clutter, the stuff has to have a destination. Establishing KEEP, DONATE, TRASH and MAYBE piles allow things to be grouped in a simple way before finding them a permanent home.

4) Empty the Space
Unload the spot you're going to organize and take everything to another location.  We want the area that needs organization to be free and clear of disorder.  The only thing left in that space should be your KEEP, DONATE, TRASH and MAYBE piles.

If the space you're decluttering is quite large, you might not have the room to move everything to another spot. The same affect can be achieved by shifting everything in the room to one side with the KEEP, DONATE, TRASH and MAYBE piles on the other.

5) Do a Quick Sort with the 3 Question Rule
Ask the 3 Question Rule for each item before placing it in one of the four piles...

     • Do I really love it? (is it a treasure)
     • Do I really use it? (has it been used within the last year)
     • Do I really need it? (sometimes we think we need something when we really don't)

This is a quick sort that should take 30-45 minutes at the max.  Don't think too much about each item...emotional attachments can creep in and cloud the process.  This is where having an organizing buddy comes in handy with a different perspective.

Remember, Step 5 is just a quick sort to categorize things, which is why I include a MAYBE pile. If you aren't sure about an item, don't waste time pondering, just throw it in the MAYBE pile for later.

As things are removed from the "everything" spot and placed into one of the four piles in your new clean space, you'll begin to see the progress of what you're actually doing which will encourage the order to continue.

6) Revisit the KEEP and MAYBE piles
After the first sort, revisit your KEEP and MAYBE piles again to challenge the idea of holding onto these things.  I love this step and find it amusing whenever I'm helping someone recapture their spaces, because Step 6 is usually where their "declutter bug" kicks in and they let go.  Most of the items in their MAYBE pile end up in the DONATE or TRASH piles.

There's a reason our spaces are out of order...it's usually because we have too much stuff.  If you aren't cherishing your things and not actually using them, then let them go so someone else can. Not only is it another chance at giving more to charity, but the gift to yourself is having a space in which you can truly live.

7) Evaluate the KEEP Pile to Determine Storage Needs
Wait to purchase supplies until after the sorting process. There's always a temptation to gather organizing goodies first, but this usually leads to not having exactly what's needed for the job...or even worse, those goodies you purchase in advance aren't used and end up becoming clutter too!!

Having the right tools for the job means looking at what you actually have so you don't get stuck with a lot of stuff you might not need (;

8) Group Objects Together for Placement
Now that you've figured out what you're keeping and you have your storage tools ready to go, the next step is to group like pieces together for easy placement back into the space.

Group like things together.  How you do this really depends on the space and what you have in your KEEP pile.  If you're organizing the living room, you might have a group of items that all go in a bookcase with another pile that's headed for the media cabinet.  If it's the kitchen you're decluttering, you might break things up into these categories...
  • food storage
  • pots & pans
  • utility drawer
  • service pieces (platters, trays, bowls, etc)
  • cutting boards
We just want the put-away process to be easy and quick.  Grouping like items together and taking them all at once means you're saving valuable time that could be used to organize other areas.

9) Add Labels for At-a-Glance Organization
You may have put away the clutter, but make sure those newly placed items are easy to find too! Adding labels to your bins and baskets will make it easy to access what's inside.

10) Relocate Items from Other Areas
Once everything is put away, now is the perfect time to locate out-of-place items in other parts of your home or office to add back in to your newly organized spaces! Once things have a place, you'll begin to noticed that the order will grow.

Today's Challenge...

For today's challenge I'd like for you to declutter just one space in your home, preferably something small.  Try a drawer or maybe a closet for your first attempt.  Use the 10 steps above to walk you through the process and be kind to yourself as you go along.

Tools for the Journey...

We love sharing freebies and have some great printables to help with the challenge for today...

Simplify Your To-Do List with the 7 Daily Do's {Day 2}

Yesterday we talked about how to create a Master To-Do List and today we want to build on that by incorporating the 7 Daily Do's.  We humans are creatures of habit, so it's important to make mindful intentions each day to keep us moving in the right direction.  We're wanting to keep things simple this month and so today's focus is how to simplify your to-do list with the 7 Daily Do's.

I struggled for the longest time with countless lists of unfinished projects.  I had good intentions, but wasn't really clear on what actually needed to be done.  Without clarity, we perish and so my organizing intentions were a flop!  I would make a list with VERY broad topics and then wondered why nothing was ever finished.

My Mom has always been a list maker and an awesome planner so she suggested breaking down those big projects into smaller steps. I'm a creative gal and sometimes have a challenge finishing things because I get so excited about the next big idea.  Henceforth, nothing is ever fully completed (;  I didn't think a small list would make much of a difference...it's just a smaller version of my big list that isn't getting done.  Oh boy was I wrong! Enter in the 7 Daily Do's...

What are the 7 Daily Do's?

The 7 Daily Do's is list of 7 tasks for the day that are in addition to your normal daily chores. They can be individual steps to complete a larger project, errands that aren't on your regular schedule, or a simple way to organize your routine if you aren't using a planner.

I've found that a short list of 7 things seems to be the magic number. It's small enough so it doesn't overwhelm you, but yet not too small to make you feel unproductive.  In the Bible 7 represents rest and natural & divine completeness or perfection.  Hum...interesting.  I'm more restful because my tasks are getting completed which is perfect!! (;  I've tried to have a list of more than 7 and less than 7 and neither seems to work for me.  For some reason 7  seems to be the perfect balance.

How to Use the 7 Daily Do's...

In my planner I keep two 7 Daily Do lists.  One for business and the other for my personal life. Each night I make a list of 7 tasks for the following day. As each one is completed, it gets marked off the list. This way I can clearly see what needs to be done and with each mark-off, a sense of accomplishment grows.

This is where our Master To-Do List comes in...we're going to pull at least 2 things from our Master List to develope our 7 Daily Do's.  Of the 7 tasks for the day, include 4 things that are the most pressing and then 3 things that can be completed quickly.  I like to include quick tasks because if you start your day by getting a few things done right away, then that ball usually keeps rolling and you'll find that you accomplishments will grow.  Completion attracts completion (;

If all 7 tasks are done and there's still time left in the day, then I'll add one or two more, but only if everything on the list is completed. That way there's not an overwhelming daily list that never ends. If I don't complete all 7 things, no stress here...they simply carry over to be included as one of The 7 Daily Do's for tomorrow!

Works for Kids too!

We've found that this does wonders for kids too and is a great self directing tool.  Use it for their chores and projects or dreams and aspirations. When kids know what to expect, they thrive and confidence abounds.  Make sure to adjust the amount of daily do's based on the child's age and ability.  Remember this is a tool, not a stress creator (;  You may be surprised at how organized they become!

Today's Challenge...

Now, for today's challenge I'd like for you to get your Master Running List and create your first 7 Daily Do's list.  Again, we're creatures of habit so it may take some time to get used to the process.  Be kind to yourself, but keep at it.  After a while you'll begin to rely on those 7 Daily Do's and the peace in your home will increase.

Here are the steps...

          1) Try to pull at least 2 tasks from your Master Running List.
          2) Of the 7 Daily Do's, include 4 things that are the most pressing
               and 3 things that can be completed quickly.
          3) If you complete all 7, feel free to add one or two more tasks
          4) If you only complete 2 tasks, then move the unfinished 5 to the
               next day - no guilt here, because we're choosing to celebrate what
               we have done.

Tools For the Journey...

What would a list tutorial be without a printable?  We wanted to make sure you had the tools to begin asap so I uploaded our 7 Daily Do's printable to get you started.  You can download it HERE.

Each one is a little larger than an index card for ample room and there are 4 to a page.  Print as many as you like. I prefer to cut them out, leaving enough white space on the top to punch a couple of holes for metal hinged rings.  Voila!  Instant booklet (;  I also keep the back blank to jot down notes.

You'll also notice a section titled "Mindful Intention."  Staying motivated is key while we're making mindful choices, so we wanted to create a spot for daily inspiration.  Add a goal, Bible verse, quote, declaration or mantra.  Keeping your focus on a bigger vision encourages forward movement which means that simple living lifestyle won't be far behind.

So if you feel like life is a little bit out of control, staying organized and on target can be as easy as jotting down 7 simple tasks. Before you know it, all of those perpetual to-do's will be a thing of the past (;

How to Simplify with a Master To-Do List {Day 1}

You're wanting to simplify, but have no idea where to begin.  You thought the solution might be completely decluttering your home, but that was way too complicated, time consuming and let's face it, exhausting.  Believe it or not, the whole process starts with a list.  Yes, that's it.  So today I'm going to show you how to simplify your life with a to-do list.

Do you ever have those days when nothing seems to get accomplished? You've got this running list of tasks in your head only to have distractions pop up and now everything you've planned is out the window. Or even worse, you completely forget about something because you didn't write it down and now you're in a frantic rush to handle it...{sigh}  I know.  I've been there and it can be frustrating.

Over the years I learned 2 tips that were crucial to beginning my simple living lifestyle...

          1) A Master Running List
          2) 7 Daily Do's

We'll talk more about the 7 Daily Do's tomorrow, but today I'd like to start you off with a Master Running List.

Why a Master Running List?

If you haven't noticed, I like lists...a LOT...and there's a reason. It declutters the mind and keeps me focused. If I see a visual of what needs to be accomplished, it helps to propel me forward. I used to make huge, long lists of everything in my life that was a "should-do," but quickly found them overwhelming and daunting.

By keeping it simple and embracing the "do a little each day" approach used by my Mother and Grandmother, I was able to get back to the basics and accomplish more than I ever imagined.

That huge list is still there, but it's just utilized in a different way.  I call it my Master Running List because it's an ever-changing list of to-do's that aren't in my normal everyday schedule. It's a compilation of all the stuff that's put on the back burner because it can't be completed in one day.

It's a place where I record that jumbled mess of clutter that I used to store in my head for later. Once everything's out of my head and onto paper, it can be used to create bite size tidbits of doable tasks.

How It Works...

This master running list will ebb and flow, but mostly in one direction.  Things will come off and things will go on, but our goal is to shrink that list instead of growing it (;  Once you have all those to-do's out of your head and down on paper, it will be easy to break them down into smaller to-do's.

Here's an example:

Organize the house...um, okay.  That's a HUGE task.  Not something that could be completed in one day.  Break it down.  Create categories:  Kitchen, Garage, Office, Bathroom, Bedroom 1, Bedroom 2, etc.  Then under each of those categories, break down the tasks you'd like to accomplish...

Bedroom
Declutter closet (purge clothing, organize top shelf)
Clean out nightstand drawer
Clean out underneath the bed
Organize dresser drawers

Those tasks could be broken down even further if you like.  Suppose you decide to tackle the dresser drawers, but don't have enough time to organize all the drawers in one day....then your list would look like this:

Bedroom
Declutter closet (purge clothing, organize top shelf)
Clean out nightstand drawer
Clean out underneath the bed
Organize dresser drawer 1
Organize dresser drawer 2

Once things are broken up into smaller tasks, then you've got prime pickins (that's pickings without the "g" for all you non-southerners) for your 7 Daily Do's.  Below is a copy of my Master Running List...

When a task is completed, a cute little check goes in the box...and then I do a happy dance (;

Today's Challenge...

Today I'd like for you to create your own Master Running List.  Write down all the things you've been dreading and putting off for years...I want 'em on that list.

Cleaning out the garage, organizing your closet, updating your website, making your homemade Christmas gifts, approaching clients with your new designs, rebranding your business ...I want you to write down ALL those to-do's that have been cluttering up your thoughts and causing you to feel unproductive.

Then break them down into bite size tasks like we did above because we're going to utilize them tomorrow with our 7 Daily Do's.  The ultimate goal is to get rid of that "when I have an entire day to finish it" pile.

Tools for the Journey...

To make it easier for you to get started, I've got a free printable for ya!! Download our Master Running List HERE and print as many as you like (;
