31 Days :: How to Prepare a Grab-and-Go Bag - Day 4

Thank you for visiting The Homesteading Cottage. If you subscribe to our blog via RSS feed or email, you'll get helpful tips on simplicity, organization, all things DIY, natural cooking, entertaining, homesteading and emergency preparedness sent straight to you!

Today in our 31 Days of Preparation series we're going to talk about preparing an emergency bag that can be kept in the car or at home. This isn't the Emergency Preparedness 72 Hour Grab-and-Go Bag that we'll be discussing later in the month...that's a disaster supply kit of basic items that your household may need in the event of an emergency/evacuation (tornado, hurricane, national disaster).

Today's post is about preparing for those unexpected moments when you find yourself needing to be away from home for a few days. There are those times when the unplanned can happen. Maybe an out of town family member or friend is sick and needs someone asap. Perhaps something happens with our health and we find ourselves in the unexpected situation of being admitted to the hospital. It could be that dear ones in our lives have an emergency and they need us to stay with their family. Our goal during these times is just to get to those who need us instead of thinking about quickly packing a bag with all the essentials for a stay away from home.

When my Grandmother and Mother were both unexpectedly admitted into the hospital, I found myself away from home for several days at the time and needing essential supplies. When we got the call that Grandmother had a stroke, we left immediately and didn't pack a bag or do anything except focus on getting to her. One day I took Mom to the doctor for a check-up, only for her doctor immediately admit her into the hospital...a stay which ended up lasting over a month. Packing a Grab-and-Go bag and having it in the car not only could have made things easier, but it would have allowed me to stay by the side of my loved ones, instead of needing to leave to pick up essentials.

There's a reason pregnant Moms pack that hospital bag...you never know when you might be going into labor and having what you need makes the hospital stay more comfortable. That bag prepared ahead of time lessens stress because you're mind should be on other things (;

So, you're convinced a Grab-and-Go bag is a good thing...now, what to pack? Think about what might be needed on an overnight stay. I know the first thing we usually think of is a change of clothes, jammies, slippers and toiletries, but what if getting food is a challenge?

While staying with Mom and Grandmother in the hospital, the food machines weren't always filled and the cafeteria and gift shops were only open during certain hours which were usually the same hours when the doctors might stop by with updates. I learned quickly to pack food! Buying from machines and going through the drive-thru can really add up, so having snacks on hand can save quite a bit. Food is not the focus when we're caring for loved ones, but it's important to make sure we have nourishment so we can continue offering that care.

Packing a big stash isn't necessary. You just want to make sure you have something if food is hard to come by. Include snacks that keep and then check the bag every 6 months to refresh expired items. We also included cookies on our list because treats can offer a little boost of comfort (; Here's our list of snacks to consider for your Grab-and-Go Bag:
  • bottled water
  • crackers
  • nuts
  • dried fruit
  • jerky
  • trail mix
  • granola bars
  • cookies
Sometimes an overnight stay might mean we aren't sleeping in the most ideal of locations. Think about packing a small pillow and light blanket to ensure a comfortable night's sleep. A fleece throw or a soft chenille type blanket is thin enough for packing, yet can offer warmth in a cold room or snuggles for a quick nap.

If there isn't enough room for a traditional small pillow, consider an inflatable one wrapped in a pillowcase. They save space, but can still offer a soft place for your head for fall. Inflatable pillows can be found in most bath and body sections...you know, the kind used for a lavish soak in the tub. These are perfect because they're usually covered in a soft, terry cloth fabric for added comfort.

Keeping busy is essential. Take things to keep your mind moving forward in a proactive way. Include reading materials like a Bible, devotionals, favorite novel or magazines for those quiet moments. Make sure to have a pen and paper to jot down notes or thoughts during your stay. A little notebook or journal is perfect to keep notes on updates, schedules, to-do lists, medicine changes, passcodes (if you're staying at some else's home) or directions. If you're packing for little ones, don't forget to include a favorite cuddly toy, story books, crayons and activities to keep them entertained.

In your toiletry kit, make sure things are sample or travel sized and pull double duty. Apple cider vinegar is great as a facial toner, but also works as a conditioner and foot soak.  Peroxide makes a great mouth wash and can sanitize cuts and scrapes.

We have a set of travel sized plastic bottles that fit into a zipper pouch. We simply fill them with shampoo, conditioner, lotion, vinegar (toner), peroxide (mouthwash) and hand sanitizer. It's a lot less to add your own products instead of buying prepackage ones. Here are some suggestions to include in your toiletry kit:
  • toothbrush
  • toothpaste
  • mouthwash (peroxide)
  • dental floss
  • razor
  • bush/comb
  • hair ties/clips
  • small makeup bag
  • hair care products, (shampoo, conditioner, hairspray, mousse, etc)
  • lotion
  • apple cider vinegar (toner)
  • hand sanitizer
  • nail clippers/file
  • baby wipes
  • vitamins/meds
Make sure to pack comfortable clothing. The amount of changes will be up to you, but we like at least two or three changes of clothes. If they all coordinate, it'll give quite a few days worth of options. If you don't want to remove the clothes from your regular wardrobe, purchasing a few pieces can be done quite economically. Think out of the box and stop by local consignment shops, Goodwill, Salvation Army or yard sales. Since kids' clothing changes as they grow, yard sales are a wonderful way to have those extra emergency pieces on hand without much of an investment.

When thinking of jammies, don't forget that others might be able to see you (the hospital) so consider modest choices like t-shirts and cotton pants (; Slippers were essential for me while staying in hospital!! Having your shoes off really increases the comfort factor and slippers or flip-flops allow you to walk about without needing your shoes.

Having some extra cash stored in your bag can also be a good thing. It can help with parking, tolls for travel, extra funds for gas, food, etc. Putting a few dollars aside here and there can be a blessing should that Grab-and-Go bag ever be needed.

Putting together a simple Grab-and-Go Bag doesn't have to break the bank and can be done over time if you like. Make a list of things to be included and each time you go to the store, pick up a couple of the items on the list. Once purchased, simply add it to your bag. You'll find that Grab-and-Go bag will come together in no time! If you're packing for little ones too, let them be involved in the process. Get their feedback on what they'd like included and let them pack their own bag.

To wrap things up, here's the list we use to create out Grab-and-Go bags...
  • Personal Care - travel sized toothpaste, toothbrush, dental floss, mouthwash, razor, shaving cream, brush/comb, hair ties/clips, small makeup bag, hair care products, (shampoo, conditioner, hairspray, mousse, etc), lotion, nail clippers/file, baby wipes, vitamins/meds
  • Clothing - slippers or flip-flops, socks, undergarments, comfy clothes with 2 or 3 changes (make sure items coordinate for maximum change options)
  • Night Time - modest pajamas (cotton shirts and pants), blanket, pillow
  • Things to Do - Books (Bible, devotional, novels, magzines, etc), notebook/journal, pen, favorite cuddly toy, story books, crayons and activities for kids
  • Snacks - bottled water, crackers, nuts, dried fruit, jerky, trail mix, granola bars, cookies, chocolate
  • Money - Extra monies for parking, tolls for travel, extra funds for gas, food, etc.
Have you put together a Grab-and-Go bag? What items do you include for those unexpected emergencies?

31 Days :: Preparing Your Heart for a Harvest - Day 3

Thank you for visiting The Homesteading Cottage. If you subscribe to our blog via RSS feed or email, you'll get helpful tips on simplicity, organization, all things DIY, natural cooking, entertaining, homesteading and emergency preparedness sent straight to you!

As many of your know, we're participating in the 31 Days Challenge with The Nester and we've chosen 31 Days of Preparation...the perfect topic for this season of harvest.

Preparation is good for the soul. It follows the cadence of life's rhythms for the times when things are out of our control. We've all had those experiences when life is moving along just fine and then, BAM! A great shift of change that propels us into a new realm of off-centeredness. We're no longer moving in that normal dance of our days and find ourselves in a new flow of existence resembling nothing of what we once knew.

Over the last few years we've gone through quite a few of these shifts. We all do. They can be little ones, big ones or even mid-sized bumps in the road, but I've noticed something interesting in these soul changing occurrences...they take us off balance so we can find our true center in Him. It's an opportunity for faith, growth and then harvest, but we have to prepare our hearts.

Ÿ  “Be watchful, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong.” 1 Corinthians 16:13

Ÿ  “Go to the ant, O sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise. Without having any chief, officer, or ruler, she prepares her bread in summer and gathers her food in harvest.” Proverbs 6:6-8

Ÿ  “Watch therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour.” Matthew 25:13

I like the first and last verses...keep watch or prepare because we don't know when changes in life will happen. Life is hard and if we aren't prepared for times of shift, we then can be subject to the whim of the moment. Much like preparing for an emergency with food storage, savings and gear to make sure we're physically taken care of, preparing our hearts can lessen times of stress and get us to the other side faster.

Below are 5 steps that have helped us through challenging times...

5 Steps to Prepare Your Heart for Harvest
  1. Schedule Time Alone: Set aside time each day to pray and meditate in God's word.
  2. Plant a Seed for a Harvest: Plant a seed of faith by giving God your disappointments, setbacks, hurts and broken dreams and trust that He's taking care of your circumstances.
  3. Look at Yourself in a Different Light: Begin to see yourself as favored, blessed, valuable and victorious no matter what you might be going through.
  4. Talk to Your Mountains So They Move: Declare His promises each day and start speaking victory over your future..."The Lord says I am blessed. I am favored. I am prosperous. I am healthy. I am whole. I’m a victor, not a victim.” Don’t talk constantly about your situation, but use your words to change your situation! All through the day say things such as, “I have the favor of God. I can do all things through Christ. I am blessed. I’m strong. I’m healthy.” When you speak like that, you're blessing your life and speaking favor into your future.
  5. Rest, but Stand Firm: Rest in His peace and stand strong. He'll give you the strength. Don't allow circumstances or others around you to bring defeat into your life. Press forward to whatever lies ahead and God will take you to the next level.
By using these steps to prepare our hearts ahead for any situation, it blesses us with the opportunity of peace and abundant harvest in every area of our lives.

31 Days :: Preparing Your Home for Fall - Day 2

Thank you for visiting The Homesteading Cottage. If you subscribe to our blog via RSS feed or email, you'll get helpful tips on simplicity, organization, all things DIY, natural cooking, entertaining, homesteading and emergency preparedness sent straight to you!

{Nook behind front door}

Welcome Fall (; The season is in full swing and the leaves are already beginning to change. This is my favorite time of year!  The air is filled with that lovely seasonal scent and the evenings are crisp and cozy.

We chose Preparation for this year's 31 Days Challenge because our homes begin to change during this time...there's an internal and extrenal switch that happens.  It's harvest time and we begin to live differently when the days become cooler and longer. Warmer textures are displayed, soft blankets abound for a quick cuddle and the glow of twinkling lights fill our windows as the sun sets earlier in the eve.

Since it's Day 2 in our 31 Days of Preparation, I wanted to share some of the ways we've been preparing our Homesteading Cottage for fall. Today we'll focus on decor. Everything used were items we already on hand and found throughout the cottage.

Our normal fern display at the front door was replaced with a white pumpkin topiary made by a dear friend. She used items from her many bins of fall decor to embellish the layers. Of course the critters wanted to share in the photo love too (;

The credenza faces the front door and greets us each and every time we enter the home.  We placed pine cones, berries, autumn fruits and decorative pieces in the baskets on the bottom shelf. The woven suitcases on the right are perfect for additional storage and add a nice balance of textures.
I LOVE this pumpkin...the texture and touch of sparkle speak to me.  We perched it in the center of an old wooden box found in the shed and then surrounded it with natural autumn elements like pine cones and dried fruit. The lovely porcelain birds on either side have a deep richness of red and really finish things off...love them!! (You'll have to forgive the over glow of yellow in the photos...the living room is quite dark and it's hard to take a good picture)

The mantle is simple.  A few white pumpkins and gourds flank a tray of small mercury glass candle holders adorned with bittersweet and mini pine cones. The larger candle lanterns are filled with coffee beans and when the pillars are lit...oh, the aroma of coffee fills the air!!

This witch plate is a favorite in our kitchen and it makes me smile every time I see it (; Always surround yourself with things that make your heart happy.

We added a few pops of orange and some spooky, glittery green to this little wall piece in our bay window area.

And here's the bay window nook...it's a sad little neglected spot with odds and ends from other parts of the cottage. The owner told us it was intended for a dinning area, but since we already have a dining room, we decided to let it be more of a reading and cozy curl-up space.

In preparation for fall, we're going to be adding curtains to the windows, recovering the chairs (which were freebies), covering the window seat cushions, creating seasonal pillows, possibly adding a table between the chairs and doing something to the rug.  Yes, we're going to repurpose that $5 garage sale rug into something lovely, unless we find another alternative that works better (;

The chandelier is also getting a tweak...isn't it a beast?! The owner doesn't like it at all and wants a change. I think we can do something to make it more pleasing to the eye instead of having to totally replace it. We can't wait to share the before and afters when they're completed!

So those are a just a few of the things we've done to prepare our cottage for the fall. What are some ways you prepare your lovely abode to welcome the autumn season? Do you have traditional favorites that come out each year or do you celebrate by making new creations?

31 Days of Preparation Challenge - Day 1

This summer has been a time of solitude. Not being alone, but of searching within. As many of you know, we've had a shift at our Homesteading Cottage. Not only has our focus changed, but our business goals and everyday living as well. I'm a firm believer that there's a lesson in everything if we choose to see it, and so I've decided to listen to my heart and will use the month of October to move forward on a few things that have been put off for a while.

A dear friend knows I'm in the middle of doing things in a new way and mentioned that I should join The Nester on her 31 Days Challenge. You pick a topic and write about it everyday for the month of October. Wow - and the stars align (; Experts say it takes roughly 21 days to solidify a new habit into your routine...31 days? Even better! The perfect opportunity for what my heart is needing! I've never contributed to a 31 Days Challenge like this before so I'm pretty excited!

Our month long series will be 31 Days of Preparation...how to do it, how to move past those times when you want to put off what should be done today and the steps and tools that work for us. We'll discuss topics like spiritual preparation, organizing, emergency preparedness, planning ahead for the holidays, simple prep steps to help life run more smoothly and ways to get the kiddos involved.

I've found that by keeping things simple, it allows life to flow in a natural way. The unfocused part of me has always been a bit of a piler, clutter bug and procrastinator. And yes, I've experienced the "chicken-with-her-head-cut-off" syndrome on more than one occasion (well, okay...maybe more than a few occasions), but preparing ahead and having a plan has made life so much more enjoyable. I haven't perfected a complete system and still need tweaking like everyone else, but I'm still moving forward and that's really all that matters, eh? (;

I hope you'll continue to join us for our 31 Days of Preparation journey. Our second day will involve prepping our homes for the fall season and some photos of what we're doing this year.  Enter your email below and each post will automatically be delivered to your inbox. Don't forget to stop by the many other 31 Dayers for additional inspiration!
