31 Days :: 11 Preparation Tips to Ensure a Successful Day - Day 8

Thank you for visiting The Homesteading Cottage. If you subscribe to our blog via RSS feed or email, you'll get helpful tips on simplicity, organization, all things DIY, natural cooking, entertaining, homesteading and emergency preparedness sent straight to you!

As you know, we've joined The Nester's 31 Days Challenge. Yesterday our 31 Days of Preparation focused on The 7 Daily Do's and today we wanted to expand on that idea and share 11 Preparation Tips to Ensure a Successful Day.

As a creative spirit, I tend to be all over the place. Ideas flow on a continual basis which means I get distracted A LOT! I used believe that procrastination was the challenge, only to later realize it was because I didn't filter my days. By taking little steps of preparation, I quickly learned how to set up my days for success.

Plan the night before – Do everything you can to make the next day easier.
  • Lay out clothes, set your goals for the following day
  • Set out breakfast dishes, utensils, napkins and non-perishable foods so things are ready when it's time to eat.
  • If you need that morning cup of jo to get your started, set the coffee maker on auto-brew so it’s waiting for you.
  • If you have items to take with you before you leave, make sure everything is by the door in a bag and ready to grab.

Focus your morning – The simple act of centering yourself before the day begins is one of the most important things you can do and sets the tone for the day.
  • Center yourself spiritually by having time for meditation, prayer and devotions.
  • Then take a moment to center mentally by being thankful. I do this by keeping a gratitude journal. Each morning list 10 things for which you’re thankful. It keeps the lacks away and you’ll begin to see your days in a blessed way.
  • Next, center yourself physically with simple exercise...breathing, stretching, jumping jacks, running in place or rebounding. Anything to get the blood flowing. 10 minutes of rebounding (jumping on a mini trampoline) was included in my morning routine and that simple addition made a huge difference in energy for the day.

Eat a Good Breakfast – This sounds like common sense, but many of us skip this crucial part of the day.  Feed the body and it feeds your brain. By eating a nutrient dense morning meal, your blood sugar levels with be stable, your brain will work better and your heart will love you.

Implement The 7 Daily Do’s – Keep it simple and make a list of 7 things to do for the day. This is a flexible to-do list that can be altered as priorities change. Don't beat yourself up if all 7 aren't completed. Simply include those unfinished tasks as part of The 7 Daily Do's for the next day...no guilt here!

Create Blocks of Time – Have a certain time for certain things. This includes checking email, phone calls, social media time, blogging, homeschooling, business, etc. Setting blocks of time allows flexibility so you don’t feel pinned in by a specific schedule. (Tomorrow we’ll talk more about how to establish a morning and evening routine)

Declutter 15 Minutes a Day – When we have cluttered spaces, it clutters our mind. Disorganization distracts and eats up our time. If you have piles of clutter or closets stuffed to the rafters, taking small steps each day will eventually have you seeing the light.
  • Establish 4 bins – Keep, Toss, Donate, Maybe
  • Pick a spot – a drawer, shelf, corner, etc
  • Set the timer for 15 minutes
  • Ask yourself the 3 Question Rule about each item and place them into one of those 4 bins
  • Once the 15 minutes are up, put the bins away until the next 15 minute declutter. At the end of the week, put away what’s in the Keep bin, toss what’s in the Toss bin, take the Donations bin to charity and then reevaluate the Maybe bin.

Don't Get DistractedBusyness does not equal productiveness. Sometimes the details can be a distraction. If you find yourself freefalling into an endless sea of details do the following...
  • Stay on task by reviewing your schedule – Check those blocks of time again. If you’re stuck checking email or find yourself perusing Pinterest too much, only allow yourself a certain amount of time – set a timer if you have to (;
  • Look over your 7 Daily Do’s to see what you can be accomplished quickly to give yourself a sense of completion
  • Don’t get bogged down in the details. If you’re getting frustrated because something isn’t quite working they way you thought it would, step away and come back to it later.

Understand Your Work Style – We all have different ways of moving through life. My style and schedule isn’t going to work for someone else. Set up a system that works for you. If you do your best work in the morning, make sure to tackle the hard things first and then end the day with simpler tasks. If you’re a slow starter, then begin the day with quick, easy tasks and progress to the more challenging assignments later in the day.

Let Go of Perfectionism – Perfection cripples and prevents us from moving forward. Embrace where you are, doing your best is more than enough and let go of the internal critical thinking.

Give a 15 Minute Buffer – If you have appointments and errands, leave 15 minutes earlier to give extra time in case the unexpected happens. This will prevent the “rush-abouts” and you’ll feel calm and relaxed for the task ahead.

Learn How to Say No – If we’re feeling overwhelmed and distracted, many times it’s because we’re taking on too much. Learning to say no can be one of the biggest favors you can do for yourself and those you love. It helps reduce stress levels and gives the time needed for what’s really important.

By incorporating these steps of preparation, you'll begin to see more successful days filled with order and balance.

31 Days :: How to Prepare with The 7 Daily Do's - Day 7

Thank you for visiting The Homesteading Cottage. If you subscribe to our blog via RSS feed or email, you'll get helpful tips on simplicity, organization, all things DIY, natural cooking, entertaining, homesteading and emergency preparedness sent straight to you!

In honor of the 7th day of our 31 Days Challenge, I'm going to share an organizing tip that involves the number 7...

Do you ever have those days when nothing seems to get accomplished? You have this running list in your head only to have things pop up to distract the focus and now the success for which you planned is out the window. I know...I've been there and it gets frustrating. But over the years I've learned a trick to turn that unproductive day into something successful.

If you haven't noticed, I like lists and there's a reason. It declutters the mind and keeps me focused. I see a visual of what needs to be accomplished and it propels me forward. I used to make huge, long lists of everything in my life that was a should-do. I quickly found them overwhelming and daunting. By getting back to basics and embracing the "doing a little each day" method of my Grandmother and Mother, I was able to do more than I ever imagined.

And so I embraced The 7 Daily Do's and they've been such a blessing! It's a simple list of 7 to-do's for the day, additional to the normal chores. I've found that a small list of 7 things seems to be the magic number. It's not so much as to overwhelm, but yet not too small to make you feel unproductive.

In a notebook I keep two 7 Daily Do's...one for business and the other for my personal life. The night before a list of 7 tasks is made for each. As a task is completed, it gets marked off the list. This way I can clearly see what needs to be done and with each mark-off, a sense of accomplishment grows.

If all 7 tasks are done and there's still time left in the day, then I'll add more, but only if everything on the list is completed. That way there's not a perpetual list that never ends. If there are things not completed by the end of the day, they simply carry over to be included as one of The 7 Daily Do's for the next day...no guilt here!

This is also a great self directing tool for kids. Use it for their chores or projects. When kids know what to expect, they thrive and confidence abounds. You may be surprised at how organized they become!

If you feel like life is a little bit out of control, staying organized and focused can be as easy as jotting down 7 simple tasks each day and checking them off when you're done. Before you know it, all of those perpetual to-do's will be a thing of the past (;

Do you like lists or do you have another system for getting things done?  What's worked for you?

31 Days :: 5 Easy Steps to Create a Welcome Basket - Day 6

Thank you for visiting The Homesteading Cottage. If you subscribe to our blog via RSS feed or email, you'll get helpful tips on simplicity, organization, all things DIY, natural cooking, entertaining, homesteading and emergency preparedness sent straight to you!

Yesterday we shared 10 Simple Steps to Prepare for Guests with step 2 being to create a welcome basket. We wanted to go into a little more detail on how to do that and show examples of inspiring ideas for you to create your own!

Putting together a basket filled with thoughtful treats will not only make your guests feel special, but it's the perfect way to ensure they have everything they need for their stay.

Here are some easy steps to create a wonderful welcome basket that your guests will remember for years...

1. Choose a container
A traditional basket is nice, but we love this idea of including the welcome basket on the door so it's the first thing your guests will see. Wire baskets, hat boxes, a canvas bag or picnic baskets are also great ideas.

2. Include snacks and something to drink
Store bought goodies are great, but homemade goodies are the best! Include treats that bring back memories of fun times together. Don't forget to double check on food allergies beforehand. Water is a must, but you could also add a favorite soda, lemonade or tea.

3. How about a good read?
A little down time is good for the soul and including a good read in your basket will offer food for the brain during those relaxed times. Think of favorite novels, magazine or even books showcasing your hometown.

4. Add in products to pamper
Don't forget a little bit of luxury. Soaps, bath salts or lotions will help your visitors feel pampered and cared for. Focusing on all-natural products lessens the possibility of allergic reactions.

5. Personalize it
Personalize those bottles of water, make cute tags to describe the snack packets or leave notes of thankfulness for your guest's visit. Simple touches of personalization show you went that extra mile.

Many people like to include extra towels in their gift baskets, but we prefer to place those on a bench at the foot of the bed. We then top the towels with soaps and washcloths and place them next to the welcome basket.

To recap, here are the 5 Easy Steps to Create a Welcome Basket...
  1. Choose a container
  2. Include snacks and something to drink
  3. Don't forget a good read
  4. Add in products to pamper
  5. Personalize it
The cost to create a welcome basket can be minimal by using items you already have on hand, especially if you stock a gift closet.  Your welcome gift doesn't have to be overflowing, it's the thought that counts. By putting a just little bit of time and effort into creating a welcome basket, your guests will know they are cherished and will feel right at home.

Have you created a welcome basket before? What goodies would you include inside?

31 Days :: 10 Simple Ways to Prepare for Guests - Day 5

Thank you for visiting The Homesteading Cottage. If you subscribe to our blog via RSS feed or email, you'll get helpful tips on simplicity, organization, all things DIY, natural cooking, entertaining, homesteading and emergency preparedness sent straight to you!

Yesterday for our 31 Days Challenge we showed how to put together a Grab-and-Go Bag.  Today I want to share 10 Simple Ways to Prepare for Guests.  I love welcoming family and friends into our home and with the holidays right around the corner, it's a sure bet many of us will be having overnight visitors. The key in making those who enter feel right at home is hospitality, a welcoming spirit and a few special touches. Preparing for guests ahead of time and having things on hand will ensure you'll be ready to welcome everyone, even those unexpected visitors.

Here are steps we use to make sure we're prepared for our visiting guests...

1. Dedicate private space
We all have our own ways of doing things and offering some privacy to our guests allows them to be who they are in their own way. If you don't have a dedicated guest room and the kids are displaced from theirs, make it a fun experience by allowing them to camp out in another part of the home. Set up tents (homemade or bought), pack a little suitcase or bag and make it an adventure!

2. Prepare a welcome basket
We've all done it...we make that list for the trip, set out items for packing, only to leave something behind. By putting together a basket filled with thoughtful treats will not only make your guests feel special, but it's a neat way of making sure they have everything they need for their stay. (Stay tuned for our next post for ideas on what to include in a welcome basket and how to put one together).

3. Dress the bed
Layering beds with linens, light blankets and plush duvets allow your guests to control their comfort levels. Don't forget to include extra pillows!
4. Make storage space available
Having available space in the closet and drawers allows your guests to move out their suitcase and get settled...even if for just one night. Clear out a few drawers and have a some empty hangers in the closet.
5. Add a few warm touches
Have a bedside tray with flowers, drinking glasses, clock, tissues, a candle with matches and possibly with a few treats like candy.

6. A well stocked bathroom
Having stocked bath supplies ensures your guest will have what they need when it's time to get ready. Towels, soaps, shampoo, conditioner, razors, toothbrushes, toothpaste, floss, baby powder, mouthwash, toilet paper, tissues...just a few suggestions on what guests might need during their stay.

7. Create a house guest manual
With technology being a big part of our lives today, having a manual for guests can mean the difference between peace and frustration. We know how to operate our stuff, but others might not. Having a handy manual with the codes, operating instructions and how-to's is a simple way to put your guests at ease.  Even though this may seem basic, you would be surprised at just how many people aren't sure about the nuances of different machines.

To make a house guest manual simply type or write instructions and file them accordingly in a ring binder with section tabs for each piece of equipment. Below is a little list of items you might want to include in your guest manual...
  • security codes for the house alarm
  • instructions for remote controls, tv, cable box, dvd player, stereo, game console, etc.
  • guide for kitchen machines - coffee maker, dishwasher, microwave, etc.
  • thermostat (heating and cooling panel) instructions, where it's located, etc.
  • directions to favorite spots around town or to locations your guests might be visiting during their stay

8. Stock the pantry
Keep your guests in mind when stocking the pantry. When shopping, make sure to include the things they enjoy the most. Ask your guests if they have any food allergies so those items can be avoided for the duration of their stay.

9. Prep for breakfast the night before
Make the morning easier for you and your guests by putting out dishes, utensils, napkins and non-refrigerated foods the night before. If you have coffee lovers in the house, set the coffee maker for auto-brew. Leave a note on the counter for guests to help themselves with instructions on where to find additional goodies.

10. Share your schedule
Letting your guests know what to expect is very important. You might have a set routine in the morning or you might be a late sleeper. Early risers will appreciate knowing whether or not to wait for you for breakfast or to get something on their own.

By taking these simple steps, visitors will feel cared for and welcome. Here's a recap...
  1. Dedicate private space
  2. Prepare a welcome basket
  3. Dress the bed
  4. Make storage space available
  5. Add a few warm touches
  6. A well stocked bathroom
  7. Create a house guest manual
  8. Stock the pantry
  9. Prep for breakfast the night before
  10. Share your schedule
So how do you prepare for overnight guests? Are there steps you take to ensure those who visit feel a warm welcome?
